On May 8, the AmCham Sustainability Committee organized a meeting entitled The Circular Economy: New Responsibilities for Business and Consumers in Packaging Management. We started the meeting with dr Katarzyna Baranska (Partner and head of Decarbonization Poland from Osborne Clarke, an AmCham member company), who outlined the EU regulatory context and possible approaches to defining risks and opportunities.
The shift to a circular economy is an essential part of the European Union's strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and protect our environment. Single-use plastics or the Packaging Directive are milestones of this groundbreaking policy, and we have discussed what this means for business and what it will change in the lives of consumers. Some of the questions raised during a meeting regarded under which categories the SUP product should be classified, how to determine which entity markets SUP products in Poland, and who is the end user from whom the consumer fee should be charged. Then we followed with Katarzyna Kucisz-Rosłoń from McDonald’s Polska, who shared best practices regarding new responsibilities for business in packaging management. She emphasized that in many cases, regulations on the circular economy are unclear (it is common that different Marshals' offices interpret the same regulations in very different ways). Besides, business needs time to get prepared for new regulations as these processes require time and efficiency, and no one makes business decisions in an uncertain legislative landscape.
