On May 22, the AmCham Sustainability Committee organized a meeting entitled Navigating Double Materiality Assessment: Insights and Best Practices!
Our speaker was Aleksandra Falkowska, PhD, Manager of Sustainability & Economics from Deloitte, an AmCham member company, and we discussed the fundamental concepts, common challenges, and best practices regarding the Double Materiality Assessment (DMA).
DMA has been introduced to streamline mandatory disclosures by identifying ESG topic materials for each organization. Yet, executing the double materiality analysis has proven challenging for many organizations as the guidelines provided so far often need more clarity. The most common challenges include integrating quantitative evidence into analysis, incorporating stakeholder opinions in the evaluation process, assessing risks, impacts, and opportunities with portfolios, particularly in financial companies, and lastly establishing clear scoring scales for assessments. As the Board members play a crucial role in addressing ESG issues, it was underlined that they must understand the risks and opportunities associated with Double Materiality Assessment.
Thank you to our speaker and Mariusz Wawer, 3M, for moderating the discussion.
