EVENT DETAILS
On March 25, the AmCham HR Committee hosted a meeting with Ms. Joanna Tyrowicz, Professor of Economics at the University of Warsaw, co-founder of the research center FAME|GRAPE, and a Monetary Policy Council member for the current term.
We discussed how macroeconomic mechanisms translate into labor market attractiveness, which economic indicators businesses should monitor, and what they imply for employers and employees. Some of the questions raised during a meeting included the level of salaries in Poland, especially in comparison to Western Europe, minimum pensions, low retirement age, the demographic gap in Poland, and the attractiveness of the Polish labor market for foreigners in general.
We discussed that the high degree of labor market segmentation in Poland implies that the “average employee” almost never exists. We learnt about the geographic gradient of wages and the role of agglomerations in the further rise of the service sector in Poland. We also hypothesized about the time needed to close the pay gap between Central European countries and Western Europe. We looked at the demographics of the active workforce in Poland, and that Poland significantly falls behind other EU countries when it comes to creating jobs embracing the needs of parents and individuals with all forms of handicaps, such as part-time employment and flexible hours employment. Becoming an inclusive employer will be a comparative advantage with a shrinking labor force and growing wages. The job offers suitable for parents (mostly women, especially in remote areas) as well as for individuals with some form of disability will be particularly successful in attracting high-quality employees.
Thank you to our speaker and Piotr Zygmunt, and Małgorzata Grzelak, Co-Chairs of the AmCham HR Committee, for moderating the discussion
