On February 26, the AmCham HR Committee organized a session on How to Win and Execute Projects Effectively in Multicultural Teams – HR & Manager Responsibilities. Our speaker, KATSIARYNA ZHUKOVICH, HR Manager at Intego Group and cross-cultural researcher, explored how to build strong, sustainable relationships within multicultural teams and navigate global business opportunities. She highlighted how cultural differences influence business development strategies and the critical role of HR professionals and managers in creating environments that foster collaboration, trust, and innovation.
The discussion examined the benefits and challenges of cross-cultural teamwork, showing how poor communication can reduce morale, limit career growth, and stifle creativity. Katsiaryna explained key cultural frameworks, including Hofstede’s Cultural Dimensions and Edward T. Hall’s high-context and low-context communication, and illustrated how these shape workplace dynamics, feedback, and relationship-building. She also discussed how language in the workplace drives corporate culture, and introduced practical tools such as upgraders and downgraders to adapt communication across cultural contexts.
Poland and the United States, for example, demonstrate striking differences in uncertainty avoidance, power distance, individualism, and indulgence, which may affect collaboration and leadership styles. Understanding these nuances is essential for managing multicultural teams effectively.
The session reinforced that success in cross-cultural projects depends on awareness, adaptability, and balancing cultural context with company policies—helping leaders create teams that are not only efficient but also resilient and inclusive.
