Gen Z reshapes expectations in the workplace by placing greater emphasis on emotional openness, mutual respect, and work-life balance. Research shows that the vast majority of Gen Z employees would like to discuss their emotions at work, and they’re nearly three times more likely to stay motivated when they feel they can bring their authentic selves to work.

We have discussed these topics with Iga Pilewska, Future of Work Expert and the founder of Openess Up, at the latest AmCham HR Committee’s meeting entitled Gen Z and Emotions at Work: A Challenge and an Opportunity for Employers.

While the Gen Z generation is more emotionally aware and reports higher levels of workplace anxiety, at the same time, over half of managers still believe that work is not the place for emotions. This disconnect leads to misunderstandings and tensions, and over time, to lower engagement, satisfaction, and higher turnover among younger employees.

What steps can organizations take to effectively meet Gen Z needs and expectations? Some of the presented examples included creating a safe space where managers can practice and improve with no risk (Cisco); special programs for practicing mindfulness at work (SAP) or practicing an emotional check-in at the beginning of team meetings (Canadian Civil Service).

As it turned out from the discussion, many expectations common to Gen Z are also beneficial for all employees (including Gen X), as they promote a healthier, more purpose-driven, and flexible work environment. From the other side, managers, burdened with multiple responsibilities and pressure for results on a daily basis, will approach challenges with little time for the intensive coaching Gen Z requires.

Thank you, Iga Pilewska for the presentation, Małgorzata Grzelak, and Piotr Zygmunt for moderating the discussion.
