On February 18, 2025, the AmCham Sustainability Committee hosted a meeting entitled "Bridging EU and Global Chemical Frameworks: How a Global Ban on Silicones Would Disrupt Strategic Supply Chains." Our speakers were Alexander Majer, Vice-Chair of the Environment Committee at American Chamber of Commerce to the European Union (AmCham EU) and Government Affairs Director for EU Chemicals Management at Dow, and Karolina Warowny-Decoene, Sector Group Manager for Silicones Europe, a sector group of the European Chemical Industry Council (Cefic).
During the meeting we talked how silicone polymers are vital across numerous industries, including defense, healthcare, electronics, automotive, construction, and renewable energy, and are key to achieving the European Green Deal's objectives.
The discussion, moderated by Mariusz Wawer and Julian Krzyżanowski, Co-Chairs of the Sustainability Committee, delved into the complexities of aligning European and global chemical regulations. This conversation is especially timely, given Poland's Presidency of the EU Council, which emphasizes cross-sectoral security in defense, health, digital, and energy sectors—areas heavily reliant on silicone applications.
This meeting also underscored the necessity for cohesive regulatory approaches to ensure that essential industries continue to thrive without facing undue disruptions from global policy shifts.
