Una Europa Joint Bachelor in Sustainability (BASUS) is a new joint international and interdisciplinary undergraduate program intended to launch in the academic year of 2025/26. BASUS has been developed by eight leading research-intensive universities of the Una Europa alliance: KU Leuven, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Universität Zürich, University of Helsinki, Jagiellonian University in Kraków, the University of Edinburgh, and Freie Universität Berlin.

With the growing pertinence of sustainability across sectors and across disciplines, there crystallizes a need for professionals with communicative skills and broad enough knowledge to facilitate dialogue between specialists and help steer businesses, institutions and general public through sustainable development and just transition.

We would like to integrate a long-term collaboration with external stakeholders.

1. Namely, we want to organize focus group interviews with representatives of various sectors to gain insight into their realities and collect their professional feedback – more detailed information about the methodology of FGIs below.

2. Cooperation with the business world – in particular pertaining to perceived gaps in skills and competencies on the job market – will constitute a key component for the design and development of new elective courses for the program, for which we have already received external funding.

3. Once the program launches (most likely, in fall 2025) we want to establish an advisory council composed of external stakeholders with whom we could annually or bi-annually consult the state of the program and directions of potential evolution.

4. Moreover, it is our intention to integrate service-learning, wherein students participate in the development of real-world solutions, into the BASUS program; we plan to run a pilot course in the upcoming spring semester.
